boulangerie :: malmö

 

Just about to head off to our favourite Malmö bakery to pick up a late breakfast. Boulangerie has really great sourdough bread, fantastic pain aux raisins (my favourite) and they do an excellent lemon tart (Grant's favourite). You need to go early though, Boulangerie's popularity means they often sell out of most things before lunch time!

I love Boulangerie's shop exterior, and the interior is quite beautiful too, with a black and white check floor (I do love a good back and white check floor!) and rustic French butcher's blocks. You can sometimes also spot Boulangerie's fabulous vintage Citrön trucks at farmer's markets and festivals around Malmö and Lund.

bhalla papdi chaat :: lentil dumplings with fried pastry, yoghurt & pomegranate seeds

 

Grant and I tried bhalla papdi chaat for the first time when we visited London earlier this year. The combination of textures and flavours (pomegranate, tamarind, mint, coriander, yogurt) was just amazing. We talk about it often!

Today a recipe for bhalla papdi chaat popped up on the Guardian website and I think it's a sign that I need to try it at home. It will be quite interesting to see how that goes since the lentil dumplings and the papdi both require deep frying - I have a completely unfounded and irrational fear of deep frying and have never ever deep fried anything. For this recipe though, I am willing to give it a go!

frittata of rice, baby zucchini and feta

I hope to try this recipe tonight. Which is quite apt really, since it's from the fabulous food blog Sunday Suppers. If you haven't already, get on over there and take a look at the delicious recipes and mouth-watering photos!

Update: The frittata was delicious, although I did forget to buy cream (I used sour cream instead) and my cooked rice was far too gluggy. Looking forward to trying it again, with perfect rice and the right ingredients!

A word of warning - this was the first time I had made a dish where the frying pan was transferred to the oven, and when I was serving the frittata not long after it had come out of the 205°C/400°F oven, I absentmindedly grabbed the handle. Ouch. My advice would be to wrap a dish towel around the handle as soon as you remove it from the oven.

porgie + mr jones

I just got off the phone with G in Australia and he had french toast with quince and mascarpone for brunch this morning at a great little cafe in Berry. Mmmmm. So now I'm craving a real brunch. And by real brunch, I mean one where I could choose scrambled eggs or french toast or pancakes or eggs benedict. Not a breakfast buffet thank you, and not a breakfast plate with a little bit of everything on it.

If I was in Melbourne I think I'd head to porgie + mr jones (see below - what a fantastic space!), but since I'm in Malmö it looks like it's the breakfast buffet or a bowl of cereal at home. Dear Swedish readers (especially those of you in Malmö), would a real brunch cafe work here? One where you had to commit to a single dish? Could the breakfast buffet ever be replaced?

G, maybe you could try this place out while you're down in Melbourne. The scrambled eggs with goats cheese sounds pretty perfect to me.
